Job description: Mt. Edgecumbe High School (MEHS) is looking for a Highly Qualified English Language Arts (9-12) teacher. Our teacher must be a high-energy, patient, innovative, creative and culturally sensitive instructor. Alaska teaching experience is preferred. Our search and selection committee is seeking a qualified individual who will initiate researchbased instructional strategies, differentiate instruction to address individual learning styles, rate of learning, and level of maturation and different levels of learning achievement. To respond to these differences, it is expected that our teacher will vary materials, utilize challenging academic technology tools and applications which frequently assess academic growth. The teacher is responsible for the implementation of MEHS curriculum that directs the learning process and achievement of assigned students by developing, nurturing and sustaining a school and classroom culture conducive to student learning. We welcome a teacher experienced with new and innovative approaches and a commitment to team planning and academic inquiry which may make us a stronger department. The teacher's responsibilities will include: work in partnership with parents/guardians, students, regular education teachers, academic and residential counselors, residential and tutorial settings staff members and the administration in accordance with the Mt. Edgecumbe High School mission and vision goals in order to promote student achievement. Highly Qualified credentials as determined by the State of Alaska Department of Education in hand are required.We are looking for a teacher who will utilize differentiation and scaffolding professional practices in their unit, weekly and daily lessons in the process of addressing the Alaska Standards and implementation of MEHS curriculum. They will implement and rely upon data/results driven strategies where students and their parents may self- assess their academic progress. Teamwork / team player mentality is required as school wide goal is interdisciplinary collaboration to deliver a challenging and successful environment for all students.MEHS is a residential high school with 400 students from over 100 communities throughout Alaska. Most come from villages with high schools of fewer than 50 students. Approximately 80% are Alaska Native. The diverse population results in a unique and remarkable learning community – a blending of cultures and beliefs, old ways and new – honoring the wisdom of the past while working together to forge a bright future. Mt. Edgecumbe students are exceptional individuals who want to be effective leaders in a variety of areas. Recent surveys indicate that approximately 80 % of our graduates go on to four-year colleges or other post-secondary educational and vocational schools. Our institution has earned a reputation through the accomplishments of many distinguished alumni who graduated between 1947-1983 and 1985 to the present.Our school is located in Sitka, Alaska, an island in the southeast peninsula. Transportation in and out of Sitka is by commercial or private airlines, the Alaska Marine Highway (ferry system) and boat travel. Year round population is approximately 8000 people.
