O’odham (Tohono O’odham) Translator – 1099 Independent Contractor (Remote)

This is a remote position. We are seeking a qualified O’odham (Tohono O’odham) linguist to support research-related translation projects, including materials used in human subjects research. This role requires precision, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to deliver certified translations appropriate for formal research settings. This is a 1099 independent contractor opportunity with flexible, project-based assignments. Key Responsibilities • Translate written materials between English and O’odham (Tohono O’odham) • Ensure translations are accurate, complete, culturally appropriate, and research-ready • Translate documents such as: • Informed consent forms • Recruitment and outreach materials • Participant-facing research documents • Study protocols and questionnaires • Incorporate feedback from reviewers or subject-matter experts • Support back-translation or validation workflows when requested • Deliver translations with a signed Certificate or Affidavit of Accuracy • Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of sensitive information • Meet agreed-upon turnaround times (typically 1–2 weeks per project) RequirementsCertification Requirement • Each translation must include a signed Certificate or Affidavit of Accuracy • Certification applies to the translation itself, not to holding a professional credential • Professional certifications (e.g., ATA) are not required Required Qualifications • Demonstrated fluency and strong literacy in O’odham (Tohono O’odham) and English • Experience translating formal, academic, legal, medical, or research-related content • Deep understanding of O’odham linguistic and cultural context • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy • Ability to meet deadlines and collaborate on revisions Preferred Qualifications • Experience supporting academic or community-based research projects • Familiarity with informed consent language and ethical research communications • Experience working with Indigenous or culturally sensitive materials BenefitsWork Classification • 1099 independent contractor • Remote, project-based work • Contractor provides own equipment and workspace
