About the Role Our client, a global leader in pharmaceutical research and development, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , is seeking a highly experienced Principal Scientist in Medicinal Chemistry. This senior role will be instrumental in designing and synthesizing novel small molecule drug candidates for challenging therapeutic targets. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of synthetic organic chemistry, structure-activity relationship (SAR) optimization, and modern drug discovery methodologies. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for flexibility while fostering collaborative innovation within our state-of-the-art research facilities in Philadelphia . You will lead key projects, mentor junior chemists, and contribute significantly to our pipeline of innovative medicines. Key Responsibilities Lead the design, synthesis, and optimization of novel small molecule drug candidates targeting specific disease pathways. Develop innovative synthetic routes and troubleshoot complex chemical reactions. Collaborate closely with biologists, pharmacologists, and computational chemists to drive structure-based drug design. Execute SAR studies to improve potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetic properties of lead compounds. Independently manage multiple drug discovery projects from hit identification to preclinical candidate nomination. Analyze and interpret spectroscopic data (NMR, MS) and chromatographic results to confirm compound structures and purity. Mentor and guide junior medicinal chemists, fostering their scientific development and project contributions. Stay current with the latest advancements in synthetic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and drug discovery. Contribute to patent filings and scientific publications. Present research findings clearly and effectively to project teams and senior management. Requirements Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry from an accredited institution. A minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in medicinal chemistry within the pharmaceutical industry, demonstrating a strong track record of success. Expertise in modern synthetic organic chemistry, including asymmetric synthesis and heterocyclic chemistry. Proven ability to design and execute complex synthetic strategies and optimize lead compounds. Deep understanding of SAR principles, ADMET properties, and their influence on drug design. Experience with computational chemistry tools and structure-based drug design is highly desirable. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and motivate teams. Proficiency in standard laboratory instrumentation and techniques. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative research environment.
