About the position
The Registered Peer Support Specialist (RPSS) is an individual with lived experience in mental health and/or substance use recovery who provides strength-based, person-centered support to individuals receiving services. The RPSS utilizes their personal recovery journey to inspire hope, promote self-determination, and assist individuals in achieving and maintaining recovery while navigating behavioral health systems.
Responsibilities
• Provide peer recovery support services based on shared lived experience
• Establish trusting, supportive relationships that promote recovery
• Assist individuals in identifying strengths, goals, and recovery pathways
• Support engagement in treatment and community resources
• Collaborate on recovery planning and goal development
• Assist with community integration (housing, employment, social supports)
• Complete documentation in compliance with DBHDS and DMAS standards
• Participate in team meetings and interdisciplinary collaboration
Requirements
• Registered Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS/RPSS) in Virginia
• High School Diploma or GED
• Lived experience in recovery
• Completion of DBHDS-approved training program
• Ability to pass background checks
Nice-to-haves
• Experience in behavioral health or substance use services
• Knowledge of DBHDS and Medicaid requirements
• Strong communication skills
• Experience with electronic health records
