Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Black Mental Health Matters Inc. (BMHM) is a nonprofit dedicated to destigmatizing mental health in Black communities. They are seeking a Volunteer Principal Product Designer to shape the design direction of their digital products and community experiences, mentoring other designers and leading design initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Own design execution: Lead end-to-end product design for BMHM's digital properties, from concept through launch
- Shape design standards: Establish and evolve visual and interaction design standards, including a shared design system for BMHM's brand
- Turn insight into design: Translate research insights and community feedback into intuitive, accessible product experiences
- Mentor the design team: Provide design direction and feedback to volunteer designers, helping raise the bar on craft and consistency
- Collaborate cross-functionally: Work closely with the Director of UX Research & Design, program leads, and volunteer engineers to align design with organizational goals
- Champion accessibility & inclusivity: Design with cultural humility and an awareness of the sensitivities involved in mental health content and communities
- Help shape design process: Bring a point of view on tools, process, and rituals (critiques, reviews) that help a volunteer design team ship high-quality work
Skills
- 7+ years of product design experience, including senior or principal-level ownership of complex products
- A strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product thinking, visual craft, and interaction design
- Proficiency in Figma (or similar tools) and experience contributing to or building design systems
- Comfort designing in ambiguity, with limited resources, and across a distributed volunteer team
- Genuine passion for mental health advocacy and Black community wellness
- Experience mentoring or leading other designers is a strong plus
