Summary
The Director, Legal and Compliance Operations is responsible for designing, implementing, and scaling the operational infrastructure that enables the Legal and Compliance functions to operate efficiently, consistently, and strategically. This role owns the systems, workflows, and processes through which legal and compliance work is delivered, but does not provide legal advice or make compliance determinations.
This role serves as the operational leader of the department—driving process development, optimizing workflows, managing external vendors, and building systems that enhance transparency, speed, and quality of legal and compliance services. A core mandate of this role is to leverage advanced technology, including AI-enabled workflows, to transform the efficiency, scalability, auditability, and defensibility of the company’s legal and compliance operations. This includes identifying automation opportunities, designing intelligent workflows, identifying opportunities for AI and automation, and establishing governance controls to ensure responsible and compliant use of AI.
The role functions as a strategic operations partner to the Chief Legal and Compliance Officer, translating strategic priorities into actionable processes and ensuring the department operates as a high-performing, business-aligned function.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Legal & Compliance Operations Leadership
Design and implement the operating model for Legal and Compliance, including intake, prioritization, tracking, and reporting
Develop standardized workflows to support contracting, regulatory compliance, and operational requests
Establish clear service delivery frameworks (SLAs, triage models, escalation paths)
Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives
AI Strategy, Automation & Intelligent Workflows
Lead integration of AI-driven capabilities into the operating model
Identify and implement AI and automation opportunities across Legal and Compliance processes, including intake, triage, contract lifecycle support, audit readiness, and compliance monitoring
Establish and enforce AI governance standards, including validation, documentation, auditability, and human oversight requirements
Ensure all AI-enabled processes meet regulatory, privacy, and risk management expectations
Evaluate and manage AI vendors and tools
Measure and report on AI-driven performance improvements (cycle time, cost, risk reduction)
Intake & Workflow Management
Build and manage centralized intake systems
Develop prioritization frameworks
Implement AI-assisted triage
Provide visibility into workload and bottlenecks
Contracting Process Development & Optimization
Own contracting workflow infrastructure
Standardize intake, approvals, and execution
Operationalize templates and playbooks
Implement AI-assisted contract processes
Improve consistency and reduce cycle time through automation
Report on contracting metrics
Vendor & External Counsel Management
Manage outside counsel and vendors
Track legal spend, performance, and service quality (including cost, turnaround time and outcomes)
Manage technology and AI vendors
Lead implementation and optimization of vendor-supported solutions
Process Engineering & Continuous Improvement
Identify inefficiencies and scalability gaps
Apply structured process improvement methodologies
Develop SOPs and documentation
Drive adoption of automation and AI tools
Implement legal operations technologies
Metrics, Reporting & Leadership Enablement
Develop dashboards and KPIs
Measure impact of AI initiatives
Provide actionable insights to leadership and identify systemic risk trends
Build reporting suitable for executive leadership, Board, and regulatory audiences
Act as execution partner to Chief Legal and Compliance Officer
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Strong process design and operational mindset
Experience developing and implementing AI, automation, or workflow tools
Strong project and vendor management skills
Ability to translate legal and compliance requirements into systems
Analytical and data-driven decision making
Excellent communication and collaboration skills

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree required
Advanced or technical/AI-related training strongly preferred
EXPERIENCE
7+ years relevant experience in legal operations, compliance operations, healthcare operations, or similar
Experience applying AI or automation in operational environments preferred
Healthcare or other regulated industry experience strongly preferred
